Even under the best of indications and technical performance, spine surgery has its limitations. People often don’t understand that even with modern medicine and all advancements, there’s still only a twenty to thirty percent success rate with spine surgery at two years. This is why patients truly need to exhaust AZ pain doctor treatment prior to undergoing the knife if possible.

Here are six common reasons for back pain after a technically successful surgery:

1) Scar tissue forms around the neural elements and causes pain. If the scar tissue is removed with further surgery, guess what happens? Yes, more scar tissue will return, as the human body is very good at making it.

2) A spine fusion was performed with correctly placed rods and screws along with bony fusion biological substances, except the body did not respond with an appropriate fusion. When this occurs, the screws and rods still absorb load, and eventually may break with the person experiencing substantially increased pain. At times further surgery may fix this, at times not. Every time further surgery is done success rates drop, so AZ pain management should be exhausted prior.

3) When a neural element is freed up during surgery, or decompressed as it’s called, typically it responds appropriately by healing along with pain going away. There are times, however, when the nerve(s) has been pinched for so long it decides not to heal even after being decompressed. The pain may not go away, and further decompressive surgery is not indicated unless a nerve is being compressed.

4) The spine surgery that was done only took care of part of the issue. A situation may be if an adult has lots of pain from a substantial degenerative scoliotic curve that includes a dozen levels. Rather than taking care of all levels, the individual decides just to have three segments operated on. This decision will decrease the risk for the patient, but at the same time increase the risk that continued pain will be the end result. Rather than achieving 80% pain relief, maybe only 50% is achieved.

5) The reason for spine surgery was not chosen well. If a patient has straightforward degenerative disc disease at three lumbar levels with significant back pain, fusing all three levels has been shown to end up with a typically less than satisfactory result. One or two levels is commonly performed.

6) The result right afterwards was great, however, a problem popped up at an adjacent level later. Each spinal level in a normal situation absorbs stress, however, if there has been a spine fusion no stress is absorbed. So the stresses travel to the adjacent level(s) and they may experience subsequent arthritis.

Because of these reasons, it is important to try conservative treatments including pain management, physical therapy, Phoenix chiropractic, and spinal decompression prior to the knife.

HEALING BACK PAIN offers relief from chronic back pain without drugs, surgery, or even exercise. Recognizing the connection between the mind and the body, Dr. John Sarno explains how back pain can be the end result of long-term emotional pain, particularly Tension Myositis Syndrome, better known as TMS. According to Dr. Sarno, TMS is the predominant cause of back and shoulder pain in people of all ages. Although its origins are unknown, Sarno has discovered through years of clinical studies that TMS is a physiologic alteration in the muscles, nerves, tendons, and ligaments that make up the postural muscles–the neck, entire back, and buttocks–of the body. According to Dr. Sarno, the body is tricked into expressing this unspoken pain by the unconscious mind, causing the conscious mind to recognize it but without the ability to heal it. In HEALING BACK PAIN, Dr. Sarno explains how anxiety and unexpressed anger can trigger a muscle spasm, why successful people are more prone to TMS, and how people train themselves into living with chronic pain. Most importantly, Dr. Sarno includes a specific plan of action for sufferers that is the first step to defeating this painful syndrome.
