Lumbar microdiscectomy back surgery is quite a very common surgery carried out to reduce pain, numbness and tingling of the back and legs caused by a slipped (herniated) disc of the spine.. The surgery is performed with the purpose of taking away a small piece of the nucleas pulposus that has herniated and is causing back and leg pain as a result. It is more than normal to feel nervous or worried about your impending surgery so this short article aims to alleviate some of your concerns by answering a number common questions relating to lumbar microdiscectomy surgery.

What is the chance of a successful Lumbar Microdiscectomy?

85 – 95% of the time a Lumbar Microdiscectomy will be successfull in curing lower back and leg pain. After the surgery relief from the pain is quite fast, however in some rare situations it can take up to 6 to 8 weeks for the pain to subside. If the disc has been herniated for a long time then the success rate of the surgery is rarely 100%, there will also be residual weakness and tingling in the back which will be tolerable however.

What are the limitations of the Lumbar Microdiscectomy?

A slight weakening of the back is the major limitation post lumbar surgery. When a disc in your back heriates or ruptures a hole is created in its outer ring. To remove the excess loose material and successfully complete the surgery the surgeon will make this hole bigger, but there is no way to repair this enlarged hole once it has been altered. So while the surgery will be effective in removing the pain to your lower back and leg – you will be left with a permanently weakened outer ring around one of your discs. You will need to exercise extra caution to prevent any increased stress to your back as it will be prime for reherniation after the surgery.

Can you explain the difference between a bulged and herniated disc?

A bulging disc is a slight protrusion of the center of the disc (nucleus pulposus) into the spinal canal. In a bulging disc, the annulus fibrosus (outer ring) has not been ruptured. A disc herniation is a large protrusion of the nucleus pulposus (center of the disc), which has burst through the annulus fiborsus (outer ring of the disc) into the spinal canal, invading the surrounding nerves and causing pain in the back, buttocks, hips, or legs.

Will I have to take medication for pain after the surgery?

Pain medication is administered in the hospital following surgery. You will generally need oral medication (anti inflammatories and pain relief) for approximately 1-4 weeks after the surgery, this time frame will depend on the individual and the operation performed.
