Many people are becoming aware that the state of mind we are in has a direct bearing on our overall state of health and well-being. Stressful emotions can sometimes seem to just ‘take over’. As a result, many unwanted responses from our bodies usually follow. Symptoms of stress show up as all kinds of aches and pains. Emotional stress manifests in corresponding stress symptoms in the body. The physical challenges may develop into chronic conditions over time and manifest as cancer, heart disease, migraines and more.
It occurs when we feel like we cannot handle a certain situation, or that the situations we cannot handle are becoming too many. We can feel overwhelmed by anxieties, fears and worries. This is when learning stress management techniques could be very useful. When we constantly keep thinking, fearing and worrying, what happens is that our bodies identify this state as a “threat”. It reacts to it the way it does when we are subjected to an actual physical attack. The body isn’t aware of any difference between an imagined threat and a real one. The body is focused on serving the ‘vital’ organs and body systems needed to defend against attack, at the expense of other body areas. For that reason, this reaction could not sustain running for long periods of time. It is when the body is running ‘on all cylinders’ like this that we can become afflicted by stress.
How can we prevent the effects of mental stress reaching and damaging the body?
When we spend a lot of time thinking or dwelling on the problem our consciousness can simply switch off. On the other hand our bodies don’t. This goes some way towards explaining how we can sometimes feel very irritated and quite exhausted when on the surface it looks as though nothing has happened to trigger it.
Keep aware of what is going on in your head, without getting sucked into it.
If you find yourself undergoing a period of stress, allow yourself to acknowledge what you are going through emotionally, mentally and physically, but without going too deeply into it. Acknowledging unhealthy thought processes empowers you to make more positive healthy choices for yourself. You could try distracting yourself if you are beginning to feel that the issue is getting out of control. You’d be surprised at what a breather can do in terms of how you respond.
A further important point is to be aware of but not to give in to the typical ‘immediate gratification’ desires that arise in response to stress, the sugar fix, the caffeine hit etc. Stress causes lack of concentration as well as a decrease in energy levels. Faced with these stressors you might begin to experience the onset of cravings for sugar or stimulants in order to feel more energy. if you constantly give in to the cravings a dependency for these things might develop which will add further strain to the body.
Being able to cope with stress has a positive impact on your mental well being and overall health. Prolonged periods of stress can develop into depression that may become chronic and feelings of anger that get out of control. On the physical level, these conditions can result in fatal illness and this can have corresponding dramatic consequences for your near and dear ones.
If you feel flooded by negative emotions and thoughts, be careful not to let it take hold in the body. Take some time out to relax or be with nature, or perhaps to do some calm deep breathing.Taking some time for yourself can be quite healing as long as it is for the right reasons and not to feed into depressive actions and patterns. Look after yourself by gathering around you supportive and loving friends and family members. Push yourself toward any form of self expression, wind down the car windows and scream if you have to. Let the unwanted energy flow out of your body to release stress. And let calm confident energy take its place. Find a reason to laugh and leave stress behind.
