A vertebroplasty is a minimally invasive spine procedure that involves injecting bone cement into a vertebral fracture. These spinal fractures are often caused by weakened bones from osteoporosis. They may also be the result of cancer.

Prior to the invention of vertebroplasty, one of the main ways to achieve back pain relief from a fracture was with an external back brace. Oftentimes this may help but patients often find it annoying, especially if it’s hot outside keeping it on may be very difficult. The vertebroplasty surgery acts as an internal brace with the hardened cement and can alleviate pain efficiently and quickly.

The procedure is performed typically in an outpatient setting, although in-patients can receive it as part of treatment. The patient is situated prone (face down) on a padded table, and typically receives intravenous sedation to prohibit dangerous movement and reduce pain. The surgeon places a guidewire under fluoroscopy towards the spine. The entry point into the fracture can be on either side of the spine through an area called the pedicle.

Once the surgeon reaches the fracture point, typically a piece of bone, called a biopsy, is removed and sent to the pathology laboratory for evaluation to understand whether it is a simple fracture from osteoporosis or something very serious such as a myeloma or a metastatic cancer. At that point, bone cement is mixed up and inserted into the fracture area. It is up to the surgeon to decide whether it’s desirable to inject bone cement on both sides.

This allows for fracture stabilization and gives immediate pain relief to most patients. This turns into effectively an internal cast which gives substantial pain relief and quick ability to walk.
