Inversion therapy involves anti-gravity. An individuals feet are put into some sort of tight shoes or boots or the knees are put over something, and the person hangs upside down looking for pain relief. Is it effective? Is it safe?

The theory behind inversion therapy is that it takes gravitational pressure off of the spinal anatomy such as nerve roots and intervertebral discs. The space between vertebrae is theoretically increased during anti-gravity inversion therapy. The treatment is in essence a form of spinal traction, with body weight providing the traction.

Inversion therapy has been shown to be beneficial for short term back pain alleviation. There has been some well designed studies looking at it for long term relief. Unfortunately these studies have shown it not to be helpful for longer relief. Along with a comprehensive treatment plan for low back pain including treatment with a chiropractor in phoenix, inversion treatment may help synergistically for back pain relief.

When individuals hang upside down for the inversion therapy, it may raise one’s blood pressure. So for those who have a problem with blood pressure or heart disease, it should not be part of a treatment plan. Otherwise, it appears to be safe.

The same risk factors hold true for glaucoma, which involves elevated intra-ocular pressure. This could be exacerbated with upside down inversion treatment.

Inversion treatment does not have to be ninety degrees, it may be done at a smaller angle. Therapy can be accomplished 2x per day if desired. Those new to the treatment should start at less than 90 degrees, probably 30 degrees for a few weeks until one is used to it. Most individuals do not need to go beyond sixty degrees for excellent benefit.

Will inversion therapy help with a bulging disk? Probably not. The inversion will pull arthritic joints and disks apart, allowing individuals to feel symptomatically better for a while. However, it is unlike intermittent traction with spinal decompression treatment where a negative pressure is created inside the disk. This negative pressure pulls in increased oxygen and nutrients to the disc space, allowing for potential healing.

Can inversiton treatment help alleviate pain from sciatica. Probably it can. The reason is it pulls disks temporarily apart, potentially relieving the pain from a pinched nerve. But as mentioned, there is no clear evidence that inversion therapy will pull back in a herniated disk.

The bottom line is that inversion therapy may allow for short term back pain relief, but long term relief has not been seen. Sciatica pain relief may also be achieved, but as with back pain itself it may simply be short term.
