Sciatica is an irritation of a lumbar nerve root that can result in pain, weakness, numbness, or tingling which can travel from the back all the way through the buttock area through the lower extremity to the feet. The nerve compression is also referred to as lumbar radiculopathy. It can affect one’s ability to concentrate, function, sleep, socialize, and work. Most patients with sciatica are able to avoid surgery. Getting pain relief quicker with chiropractic treatment is significantly better than wallowing in pain for months. One percent of the United States population is suffering sciatica from a hernated disc at any point in time. That’s over 3 million people!

Chiropractic Treatment may assume a significant role in diagnosing and helping with the pain from sciatica. Initially the Phoenix chiropractors fully evaluate a patient with a complete musculoskeletal workup which includes a detailed history and physical. Posture, skeletal structure, and movement are evaluated including a detailed neurologic exam.

Imaging studies can be needed including an MRI and x-rays to see if a nerve root is being compressed (pinched nerve) and how severe the disc herniation is (slipped disc). X-rays show the bony elements, whereas MRI’s show the soft tissues best and are very good at detailing where a nerve root is being compressed. An EMG may be needed to examine if a nerve root is being pinched to the severity of neurologic damage.

As soon as the work up is compelted, a chiropractic treatment routine will be assembled. A standard treatment regimen can includ physical rehabilitation, PT/Rehab, spinal manipulations, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, massage therapy, spinal decompression treatment, and stretches with exercise. Spinal decompression therapy is safe, FDA cleared, revolutionary, and nonsurgical and has been demonstrated to have great outcomes in reducing pain from sciatica.

AZ Chiropractors care can be a safe, noninvasive method for relieving sciatica. Studies have shown its effectiveness and its cost is very low compared with surgery.
